March 15 Meeting: eBird.org

John Kennington
John Kennington, president of the Tulsa Audubon Society, will be our guest speaker at the March 15 meeting of the Oklahoma City Audubon Society. John’s presentation will be a fun and instructional look at eBird.org.
eBird is a real-time, online checklist program, that has revolutionized the way that the birding community reports and accesses information about birds. Launched in 2002 by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society, eBird provides rich data sources for basic information on bird abundance and distribution at a variety of spatial and temporal scales.
eBird’s goal is to maximize the utility and accessibility of the vast numbers of bird observations made each year by recreational and professional bird watchers. It is amassing one of the largest and fastest growing biodiversity data resources in existence. For example, in 2006, participants reported more than 4.3 million bird observations across North America.
In addition to his role with Tulsa Audubon, John Kennington is a programmer with Hewlett-Packard. He graduated from the University of Maine with emphasis on wildlife management and computer science. He is also a fine art photographer.
Come out for a soaring good evening and learn more about eBird. And bring a friend.
Our meetings are held September through June on the third Monday of each month. They begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Will Rogers Garden Center, I-44 and NW 36th Street. Visitors are always welcome.

Adopt-A-Park at Prairie Dog Point
The members of the Oklahoma City Audubon Society have adopted Prairie Dog Point at Oklahoma City’s Lake Hefner by participating in Oklahoma City Beautiful’s Adopt-A-Park program. Our commitment to the program is for assistance in litter management. The Parks department has responded to our request to have additional trash cans placed around the area to help keep the area clean.
Prairie Dog Point is located at the southwest corner of Lake Hefner. It attracts diverse species of birds throughout the seasons and is especially popular with birders during the spring and fall shorebird migrations. In addition to contributing to the beautification of our community, our participation in the program allows us to promote the area as a location of interest to birders, perhaps helping to avoid further habitat loss. Everyone is invited to participate in our Adopt-A-Park project by picking up litter during birding trips to the Point.
2009 Christmas Bird Count numbers
It looked like bird numbers were going to be low but our intrepid CBC teams did a great job in 2009. To find out how many birds were spotted, click here.
